Panel Discussion - Conference Proposal Drafting Tips

Event Description
This panel discussion is the first of a mini-series of events run to support GCC members who consider presenting at the GCC conference. It will be followed by a peer-feedback webinar for GCC members to provide each other feedback on their conference proposals, on February 16.During this panel discussion, attendees will gain:
1. A good understanding of what member-generated sessions are:
- How they were defined by the GCC dedicated committee,
- Examples of previous successful sessions , e.g., to understand how they were structured and what made them memorable
2. A good understanding of the submission/evaluation process of proposals:
- The submission & evaluation process of the member-generated session proposals
- Expectations from the member-generated sessions committee regarding proposals
3. Pieces of advice on proposal writing and editing:
- Advice on how to organize their thoughts/draft their session proposal (backward planning or design, emphasizing the WHY, HOW, WHAT of the session)
- Advice on aligning proposal with GCC conference theme(s).
Katie Homar (she/her) will moderate the discussion between the three following panelists:
Sudha Krishnamurthy (she/her), BDS, PhD, is the Director of Postdoctoral and Graduate Student Education and Research Development Affairs at Gladstone Institutes, San Francisco. She has over eight years of experience advising early-career scientists on career development, professional skills and on diversifying the scientific workforce. She advocates for policies related to postdocs and graduate students, students of color and international trainees, and works closely with the National Postdoctoral Association (NPA) and the Graduate Career Consortium (GCC). She is also an Assistant Adjunct Professor at the School of Dentistry, UCSF and periodically serves on NSF panel reviews and advisory committees related to postdoctoral training and career education, science outreach, and mentoring programs. Longitudinal career outcomes, the development of a Postdoctoral Curriculum, experiential training, mentorship, grantsmanship, writing, leadership and management, and postdoctoral diversity fellowship programs have been some of her recent projects. Sudha is trained as a dentist scientist with a PhD in cancer stem cell biology.
Rachel Care (she/they) is a Program Director in the Office of Career and Professional Development at UCSF (University of California, San Francisco). She served on the Member-Generated Sessions Committee and presented a Deep-Dive talk for the 2022 GCC Annual Conference. Since completing her PhD in Neuroscience at UCSF, she has been working to improve student outcomes by developing ways to connect early-stage graduate students to professional development support. She also leads students and postdocs through the process of preparation, application, interview, and negotiation for faculty positions. She has been a GCC member since 2019 and has enjoyed participating in the mentorship program and regional conferences. When out of the office, she can be found in the kitchen, in a book, or out birdwatching.
Dr. Jason Heustis (he/him) is the Assistant Dean for Student Development and Evaluation for the Office of Graduate Education at Harvard Medical School where he also holds an appointment as Lecturer in the Department of Biological Chemistry and Molecular Pharmacology.
Jason teaches graduate students, develops skills-building curriculum, deploys career preparation programming, connects students to resources for their personal well-being and professional success, and assesses graduate student learning and development. He has previously taught at the undergraduate level at Harvard University, Suffolk University and Tufts University.
Jason received an Honors B.S. in Biology and an Honors B.A. in Chemistry and Political Science from Saint Louis University (MO) and received his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Biology from Tufts University (Medford, MA), before completing a post-doctoral Curriculum Fellowship at Harvard Medical School.
